Target Audience Research

Why we need Target Audience Research:
Target Audience Research is vital to the success of our production as it gives us a clear idea as to what our target audience; wants to see in a thriller, they're preffered conventions/ ideas, what they dont want to see, the content that would most likely appeal to them and the age demographic that would most likely watch our production. It is important as it helps us identify our target audience and what would most likely entice them to watch our production, therefore allowing us to tailor our film to that demographic, and through this, making the production a more enjoyable one. In order to do this we created an online survey, which we sent out to a host of random individuals, via social media and e-mail, to answer which would provide us with the answer we needed about our target audience.

The age question was vital in suggesting to us the target age group our final product should appeal to. This will help us in decideing how complicated or non-complicated our product should be. From the pie chart we can observe that most of the people who answered our questionnaire were between the ages of 16-18. This is key for us as our product then would have to appeal for the younger generation, just as we planned it out. The gender question was important to tell us the sex group that would mostly enjoy our opening thriller film. As you can see in the graph, it was equal between both genders. This suggests that it doesn't matter who it appeals to as much because the percentage is almost equal between both of them. Our final product, however appeals to both genders so we managed to do this well.

This question was helpful in deciding what we should base our thriller on. Our thriller is mostly based on building up tension and and antagonist vs protagonist, however you can't see the antagonist vs protagonist as much in the opening. Even though that did get the least amount of votes, we still decided to go with it because, we thought that most people havn't experienced a film like that, so we went with the unique idea, so therefore we based it on that. The building of tension balanced it out becasue that got somewhat most of the votes so by having one feature that has the least amount of votes, the other one balances it out so we had no problem with this as a group.
The Sub-genre was the most important for us as a group so we'd know what we should base our product on, so whether it should have more action than crime, or it should have to rule the brain than simmer the heart. We decided that our thriller should be based more on the psychological side rather than the romance side. This is because when we were researching thriller films, we didn't come across many psychological thriller films, which is why at the end we chose to do this. This question really helped us with our plot also, because depending on the Sub-genre we had planned, the plot had to link in with it.

This question was useful because it helped us to observe whether people knew a lot about thrillers or not. Also whether they liked watching thrillers and how much people actually loved thriller as their faviourite genre of films. As you can see from our results not many people believed that thriller films were their faviourite genre, this told us that we should change our audience's thoughts about thriller films. However we found out that a lot of them loved watching thriller films, so therefore this would really help us because we would already have an idea of what to base it on and what our audience would like. Our research also helped us, especially the programs that give insight to thrillers. We actually asked people about the different programs they watch on a daily basis and we found out that some people watch breaking bad so we thought we could gather some ideas from this and use it to develop our product.
This question helped us to get ideas from other films and develop those ideas when creating our final product. As you can see from the bar graph, all of them seem to be equally rated good. This suggests that people who answered the survey know a lot about the films they watched and that they found it interesting. Inception has been voted the best, and we did in fact use inception as one of our inspiration films, and thought our film could use some scenes from inception, however instead of using the same scenes, we took it one step further and developed it into our own idea. This really showed how unique our one was, especially because we thought about using a black male in our thriller film. We decided on this because of social class. As you may all know big film producers and directors decide to use white males as the lead role and have villians as the black male or female. We decided to change this around, so it would stand out more to people.

This question, helped us with giving us a rough idea on how oftern people watch thriller films. This question was also helpful in determining when people actually take the time to watch a thriller film, because if people only watch a thriller once a year then they won't be the ideal audience for us and our product. The results suggest that people do watch thriller films at least once a month, so to an extent this is helful for us as young film creators to know our audience and what they like.
