The font and colouring used in the Friday the 13th Film poster was very useful in conveying the genre as it is a bright red colour. Red often signifies danger, blood or a threat/alert. This connotes that film will include some if not all of these within. Therefore the font clearly displays the genre of the films. The choice of font is also very helpful in illustrating the poster as a horror genre as it is a bold old fashioned font. As it is not very modern or fancy it dispels viewers from subconsciously thinking of the film as a different genre. Alongside the choice and colour. The designs used to edit the font are also helpful to help depict the genre of the film. The sharp line through the middle of the font connotes action and the not so much eerie but distorted nature of the film. So much so that the font itself has been serrated. This is backed up by the knife seen in the poster.

The font that was used in The Maze Runner looks very old fashioned and quite bold. As you can see that the dictions Maze Runner are the biggest and this connotes a lot of action/chasing, which relates to the genre of Thriller.  The colour of the font is not the typical red colour but it uses a sliver colour but it mixes a bit of brown to it, to make it look rusty/scratch. This may connote that there will be electronics involved and a lot of suspense. The font prevents the audience to think that it is a horror genre as you can see no blood and no weapons. The use of the catch phrase at the bottom connotes that it’ll keep the audience subconsciously thinking, as the font does not tell much about what’s going to happen but it portrays that there will be a lot of action and more of a mystery.

The font for the title of the movie is a scarlet red colour, depicting blood, death or violence. This connotes with the devil also and this can be linked to the theme of the movie. The colour leaks all over the font in lines, as if to signify dripping blood or splattered blood. This could signify death and gory moments in the film. It also denotes little horns which could also have also signify relationship to the devil, which therefore connotes bad, dark or evil concepts. The top of the poster and below the main title contain an italic scribbled font, to denote as if someones written it in a hurry. This could depict action in the film or it being fast paced. Demons is written in the same colour as the title can signify the devil as demons are related to the devil and the colour signifies this already.

The font used in this poster is very bold, and the fact that the letter ‘t’ in ‘gate’ is like in the shape of a cross could denote that some bits might be based on religion. The name of the actor is at the top of the poster to show he is the protagonist in the film. The name of the film is also in white to denote purity, innocence and goodness. However the background is in contrast with the heading because the background is in flames to symbolise danger, power and ‘the untamed’. However this could also denote warmth, protection etc. The actor’s name is also in the same colour as the flames so this could connote that he is the protector in the film. Because the film is about summoning the devil, Johnny Depp could be the protagonist (GOD) trying to stop it from happening. The font selection is correct for the poster because lets take the colour red for example, if the title was in red it would mean that it would foreshadow a terrible event which would happen in the film, this is because red denotes blood, anger etc. This would suggest that the title is more on the side of evil than it is on the side of good. This then would mean that evil would prevail over good and purity. The fact that it is in white denotes that it is on the side of good. Despite all this the mini statement at the bottom of the poster also gives away some of the film and what will happen. The fact that the ‘t’ is upside down could mean that the gate could be corrupted and there is a gate leading to summoning the devil. The white writing also could denote mystery, this is linked to the genre of thriller. The film poster however doesn’t give away much about the film, so people wouldn’t know much about the film and the genre.

Evaluation:

Doing a font analysis was helpful alongside the film poster analysis in finding out how important it is to effectively but intriguingly convey the genre of your film. Although the font analysis was not as informative as the film poster analysis it was still beneficial in helping us choose an effective font and colour for our genre which gave the audience an insight into what genre our opening was and also little hints to what style.
