Audience Expectations Of Thrillers
Thrillers are very useful in drawing in a wide range of audience meaning that in most thrillers there isn’t a clear target of people directors are aiming to market to. This is because thrillers vary in content often however it would be fair to say that more Men would watch them than Women due to a large number of thrillers being action and kidnapping/ ransom. Which is more targeted towards men.
For our thriller, we brainstormed a few ideas but really liked the concept of something psychological. Rather than a common action mix-up. Films that work the brain and confuse people are a lot more memorable than a simple antagonist vs protagonist style of film. We based our work off a common favourite of ours, Inception. This meant we also did not have a specific target audience but mainly for those over a certain age or ‘intelligence bracket’ as like Inception we wanted to leave our viewers with something hard to get their head around but not something they couldn’t understand. Even though we only have 3 minutes.
When doing research into who our group should target as an audience. We found teenagers in developmental stages such as late secondary school years and early college/ uni years are much more open to uniqueness, change and the unexpected. This told me that our thriller should be more aimed towards this sort of audience which will heavily affect the mise-en-scene of our filming.
Finally, audiences have often grown to expect a thriller to excite or unnerve them, sometimes even to challenge them, both mentally and morally. Thrillers usually invoke feelings of increased tension so it is not surprising audiences are expecting suspense, which is ironic. As thrillers almost stand above other genres in terms of being judged as being a thriller it could be said that they are harder to create and direct so audiences will expect a high level of acting, mise-en-scene and editing with a very professional finish. Thrillers are rarer so audiences expect them to be good.
Evaluation:
Completing this task was interesting and useful as it provided us with what our audience was looking for and what they expected. Similar to conventions this will help us adapt our movie to better suit and please our audience. The task taught us the do’s and don’ts of thrillers and commodities that are practically boring and we should avoid so that our work is unique but not too far out of line.
